Is LASIK Surgery Right For You?

Is LASIK Surgery Right For You?

If you are tired of relying on glasses or contacts to see clearly, you should consider Lasik. Lasik is a surgical procedure that can correct your refractive error. The professionals at Vision Source Castle Hills can perform this procedure to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. If you are considering seeing one of our optometrists for Lasik, you should understand that not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure. You should understand the aspects that would make you a poor candidate.

Your Vision

Your prescription will determine whether or not you are a good candidate for the procedure. If you are nearsighted, your prescription can be no higher than -11.00. If you are farsighted, your prescription can be no higher than +5.00. Finally, if you have astigmatism, your prescription cannot be any higher than 5.00.

The Health Of Your Eyes

To be a good candidate for Lasik, your eyes need to have reached maturity, which occurs when you are around 18-years-old. Also, your eyes must be healthy and free of disease. If you have glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or any other serious conditions of the eye, you would not be a good candidate. If you have dry eye, the procedure can exacerbate your symptoms, making you a poor candidate. It also increases your risk of corneal scarring.

Your Overall Health

To be a good candidate for Lasik, you need to be healthy. If you are pregnant or nursing, you would need to wait to have the procedure. Certain medical conditions also make you a poor candidate, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and autoimmune diseases. These conditions can make it difficult for your eyes to heal after the procedure.

Pupil Dilation

During your exam, our eye doctor will measure your pupil dilation. If your pupils don't dilate at least 7 millimeters in the dark, you can experience unwanted glare, starbursts, or halos around lights at night. If your pupils don't dilate enough, you would be a poor candidate.

If you are considering Lasik, you would first need a consultation with Vision Source Castle Hills in San Antonio. We can perform an exam to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. We also offer complete eye care and co-management services. To schedule an appointment, give us a call today.
