Blue Light Filtering Lenses

For decades, the biggest worry that we had for our eyes was the sun. The UV rays can be harmful, causing vision problems over time. Today, thanks to technology, we have something else to worry about, and it is called blue light. Sitting for hours at a computer, staring down at our smartphones, or spending hours in front of a TV playing video games can cause damage to our eyes. Fortunately, our optometrist at Vision Source Castle Hills in northern San Antonio can prescribe blue light filtering lenses to help prevent vision loss.

What Is Blue Light?

Blue light may seem innocent enough, but without protection, it can be harmful to the eyes. The range of colors that we see varies. Blue-violet light is at the lower end of the electromagnetic spectrum, and red is on the higher end. The light on the lower end contains shorter wavelengths. Shorter wavelengths emit harmful energy.

Blue Light Concerns

In today's digital world, it is easy to be overexposed to blue light. There are a few ways that blue light can affect you negatively.

  • Sleep Disturbances: Blue light helps regulate our circadian rhythm. It is what tells our body when it is time to go to sleep, and when it is time to wake up. The blue light from the sun helps give you the energy that you need to get moving in the morning. When you check your social media or text right before bed, it can confuse your circadian rhythm. The blue light from your devices can make your body think that it is time to wake up and give you energy when you don't need it.
  • Eye Strain: Unfortunately, our eyes are not built for our modern digital world. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to blue light can cause permanent damage to your eyes. When you are staring at the computer all day, staring down at your phone, or reading a book on your tablet, you are exposed to artificial blue light. This can cause computer vision syndrome, which is a condition that strains your eye muscles.

Besides having computer vision syndrome and sleep disturbances, you can also experience blurry vision, dry eye, headaches, or migraines. In some cases, macular degeneration and cataracts can develop.

Blue Light Filtering Lenses

If you spend several hours a day on the computer or your phone, consider getting blue light filtering lenses. They will block out between fifty to ninety-nine percent of the blue light emitted from electronic devices. When wearing these lenses, you will find that you are sleeping better, and you can use your devices longer before you start feeling eye strain.
