Following are the answers to questions our eye doctor frequently receives regarding cataracts.

.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are defined as the clouding of the lens inside of your eye. It can take place in one or both eyes. To some degree, a clouding of the lens happens naturally over time. However, if the clouding develops very suddenly or develops to such a degree that it decreases vision, it is classified as cataracts. Cataracts reduce vision by preventing light from passing through the lens and hitting the retina. The clouding of cataracts impedes this light from reaching the retina, thus decreasing vision to varying degrees.

What Causes Cataracts?

Cataracts can affect anyone of any age. However, cataracts are most common in people over the age of 45. The risk of cataracts developing increases further in those over 65. The side effects of certain medications have also been known to contribute to the development of cataracts. Those suffering from diabetes are also at increased risk for this condition, as well as those who smoke and those who are consistently exposed to ultraviolet light.

What Are the Symptoms of Cataracts?

The most common symptoms of cataracts include blurred vision, sensitivity to light, loss of depth perception, and a noticeable change in the color of the pupil. The pupil will change from black to milky white. Sometimes, the vision of a person with cataracts will have a yellow hue.

How Are Cataracts Treated?

Cataract treatment can be only be performed after following an eye exam by an optometrist. Our eye doctor will be able to diagnose the problem and develop a treatment plan for you. In most cases, cataracts are removed through cataract surgery. During this procedure, ultrasound technology is used to break down the clouded eye lens before removal. After the clouded lens has been removed, a clear artificial lens will be inserted in its place. This procedure is painless and requires minimal recovery time.
